Want peppers?

One of my customers, Geoff Bell, in SW Portland, is REALLY into peppers.  He has 44 varieties
of unusual and
hard-to-find chile pepper starts available this year.
They're currently too small to plant but will be ready
about the first of M
ay.  A list of varieties with descriptions
is available by searching Craig's List or by
contacting his directly.  His email is chiledr@yahoo.com .
Greetings!  This was first written about April 1st.  But the cool weather was not fooling.

Waking up to frost this morning, it is hard to accept that the Spring Garden Fair will be here in just
over two weeks.  That’s how last year’s cover letter began.  I am writing this four weeks before
the garden fair, so I guess I am two weeks ahead of my never caught up schedule.  Oh, there was
a hard frost this morning, too.  Burr!

Last year was the most rewarding year for us, as so many of you were so kind in your support and
encouraging words.  I was blessed to be warmly received as a guest speaker at several garden
clubs.  This year I am often thinking of the words of Job, “That which I have feared has come upon
me.”  I say this because this spring has been hard.  Failing to get as much done over winter as I
wanted, I now find myself buried in a seemingly unending burden of “must do last week” tasks.
Combined with the cold weather this spring, I fear my plants will not be as big and strong as we
both want.  In short, what I have feared is that others might think I am better than I am.  But I am
just “a sinner saved by grace”.  Good tasting tomatoes are a passion of mine, and Uncle Wayne’s
Tomatoes is my hobby business.  Neither of these are my God, my wife, my family or even my
main source of income.  Retirement, like the perfect garden, weed and disease free, still eludes
me.  So please forgive me if my plants, plant list and/or web site are less than desired.  “Next year”
all errors will be corrected – or at least I hope and dream so.

The Spring Garden Fair at the Canby Fair Grounds is May 3rd & 4th.  We will be in our same
spot with our plants amd those great tomato cages, Wallo’Waters™ plant protectors, red plastic
mulch and other growing aids.

Sharing our booth this year will be Geoff Bell.  He knows peppers like I know tomatoes, perhaps
better.  He will be offering 45 varieties of peppers and will be pleased to share his pepper
knowledge and advice with you.

www.motherearthnews.com published an excellent article entitled America’s Favorite Tomatoes.
With Mother Earth’s help and permission, I will be able to offer all varieties mentioned in their
article.  The “20 best-tasting” list is Sungold, Glacier, Stupice, New Girl, Crimson Fancy, Beefy
Boy, Orange Banana, Roma, Opalka, Amish Paste, Brandywine, Big Rainbow, Lucky Cross,
Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Aunt Ruby’s German Green, Green Zebra, Kellogg’s Breakfast,
Aunt Gertie’s Gold and German Red Strawberry.

Yes, you can pre-order.  Just email (carl@unclewaynestomatoes.com)  with a list of the plants you
want and when you want to pick them up, and we will reserve them for you.  Please help us by
placing your pre-orders no later than Wednesday, April 30th, so we can pull your orders and still
have time to set up our booth display.   Thank you!

We look forward to seeing and talking with you real soon!
